Characteristics and origin

Rhodonite forms in manganese-rich environments. Its black areas often stem from manganese oxides, which create contrasting patterns. Deposits are known in Russia, Peru, Australia, Madagascar and Canada.

Rhodonite in jewelry

Its hardness, generally between 5.5 and 6.5, is suitable for polishing into cabochons, beads and pendants. However, natural fractures and veins mean that impacts should be avoided.
